Objectives:

Overall objective: Contribution to reduction of mortality and morbidity rate of mothers and children in Afghanistan.

Achievements/Expected Outputs:

Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world; most of the maternal deaths are due to the lack of skilled birth attendants. Lack of skilled birth attendants has negative impact on the neonatal health and contributes to the high infant mortality as well. Community midwifery training is top priorities of the MOPH reproductive health strategy, which aims to reduce the high maternal mortality in Afghanistan. The community midwives, selected from rural communities to increasing the access of Afghan women to institutional delivery and skilled birth attendance. In this context, AADA through a program funded by USAID started the CME training for 26 students (from different districts of Paktika) in Sharan City to work in health facilities of the rural areas of which many remain without female health worker at the moment. The program is implementing according to the approved national midwifery curriculum within 24 + 2 months preparation months. The project will endeavor that they are competent and possess the appropriate midwifery knowledge and skills to properly manage the problems of antenatal, child delivery and postnatal in order to promote the health of women and newborn in Paktika province. AADA is implementing this project in close coordination with MOPH and other BPHS implementing partners.
